Blackburn
College, an Associate College of Lancaster University,
was founded in 1888 and has a long history of
academic and vocational success. Located
in the multicultural town of Blackburn in the
North West of England, we provide a wide range
of courses including A Levels, National Certificates
and Diplomas and Higher National Certificate
and Diplomas in subjects that include: Art &
Design, Beauty Therapy, Business, Computing,
Criminology, Engineering, Hospitality, Law,
Leisure, Science, Sport and Travel and Tourism.
We also offer a variety of Foundation Degrees,
Degrees and some Postgraduate programmes, such
as LLM Law, which are delivered in Blackburn
and validated by top UK Universities.
We offer a friendly, safe and exciting place
to learn on courses designed to create the skilled
and qualified people needed to work in the global
economy.
High
quality courses and student success:
We
have a reputation for providing high quality
education and training and have achieved recognition
as a national Centre of Vocational Excellence
(CoVE) in four areas.
In 2006 we had 100% pass rates in 25 A Level
subjects and an overall pass rate of 98.4%.
In our last inspection Blackburn College was
found to have: good teaching; good support for
students; high retention rates; strong partnerships;
and successful implementation of equal opportunities.
Our
Higher Education courses are delivered through
the East Lancashire Institute of Higher Education
at Blackburn College. This is one of the
fastest growing areas of the College. We are
proud of our academic reputation for innovative
and imaginative teaching and learning. We are
very proud of the achievements of our students,
both in terms of their progression to work and
to further study.
A
‘Graphic’ success!
Jimmy Miskell and Sophie Duff, both in their
final year of BA (Hons) Graphic Design, each
won Gold at the National MPA Roses Creativity
Award for 2006. Their awards were presented
at a gala dinner, and their prize included an
extensive work placement. The winning
designs were also featured in Adline, the magazine
for marketing professionals.

Strong
student support systems
Our
students are very important to us and we will
do all we can to help you succeed. We
provide structured tutorial support systems
on all our courses. In addition
to our general services we provide extra support
to assist students from overseas. Our
international admissions team will help to guide
you through the admissions and visa application
processes and our Overseas Pastoral Care Tutor
will provide support throughout your course.
We also offer English Language support, a multi-faith
chaplaincy service, CV and interview skills
support and information on local part-time job
opportunities.
Employment
Skills:
We
know that getting that great job when you complete
your course needs a great CV. Consequently,
we have developed extensive links with employers
so that our students can benefit from industrial
placements and can work on ‘live’
briefs. For example, our Criminology Employer’s
Forum has arranged work placements for Law,
Criminology, Public Services and Social Science
students in a range of settings including the
Police, Magistrates’ and Crown Courts
and Youth Offending Teams. One of our
more exciting developments is a unique partnership
with the music industry and the launch of our
own record label “On Song”.
We are offering creative packages which include
recording music tracks, press shots by student
photographers and the provision of graphic design
for CD covers. This activity involves students
on National Diploma Photography and Graphic
Design courses and Post A-Level and Foundation
Degree Media courses. It gives our students
valuable hands on experience and sets them up
for jobs in the media and music industry.
Music created in Blackburn now regularly appears
on MTV and other international stations.
